I (SquidgiePDX, who runs this community) first wasn't sure what I wanted to accomplish with this community.  But I think the best thing that we can do is something that the Project Mailstorm has spearheaded - and that's overwhelm people in Congress with letters.  Real, actual, taking-up-stpace, letters to those in charge in the United States Government.

If you want to read about Project Mailstorm, find the original site here: https://projectmailstorm.carrd.co/

That said, I'm going to post an idea for letters three days a week - usually Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays but this may vary wek to week - that people can take up on their own, writing a letter about the subject to the targeted audience.  But before we start delving in, here are a few things to note:
  • You should be a registered voter in the United States (or a US Citizen living abroad) to participate.  Not that letters from outside the country wouldn't help - but TPTB is going to look at a letter from someone in Germany or Australia and toss it.  You're not their consitutent, so most in Washington will not care.
  • For letters going to your local representatives - from state representatives and senators to US Congresspeople and Senators - you should include a name and return address.  But if you're sending something to, say, Trump or J.D. Vance, I would leave it off.  You can just sign it "A consitutent living in Texas" or whatever state you're from.  They don't have to have your name.  On the other side, if you've got someone like MTG or some other racist asshole as your elected representative, you may want to skip on your name as well, and just include, "A constituent from zipcode XXXXX" - but just use your 5 digit zipcode and not a Zip+4, as that makes it easier to figure out who you are.
  • If you know about the issue, go for it with your letter.  But if you don't, take a point or two from the community action post and incorporate it into your letter.
  • Each issue will be its own entry here in the community, but they will also be listed under the What You Can Do Right Now post in case you want to see previous actions.

Remember, it's the object of Project Mailstorm to overwhelm them with paper.  So if you can write as few as one or two letters a week, you can be a part of something massive!

And finally, if you can, please spread the word about this community.  The more there are of us, the fewer there will be of them.

By now everyone knows that the House of Representatives is going to vote on the discharge petition to release the Epstein files - and it's going to take Trump down.  What is Trump going to do?

He's going to take us to war.  Read here: https://www.newsweek.com/venezuela-us-donald-trump-military-attack-war-maduro-11042677

What can we do?  CALL.  If you can, call your Senators and Congressperson and tell them NO WAG THE DOG!  If you're not familiar with the expression, it's when a leader makes a sudden move to distract from something politically bad for them.  In this case, Trump is going to send our soldiers to die in a foreign war to take the focus off of him and try and negate the imminent Epstein files release.

Do what you can!
  • The Capitol switchboard where you can call and ask for your Senators & Congressperson is: (202) 224-3121
  • Find your House representative at https://house.gov
  • Find your Senator at https://senate.gov
Tell them NO sending our troops to die in a war that's nothing more than a distraction.

I'm so pissed off that I've had to take a blood pressure pill.

Newsweek just announced that Defense Secretary Hegseth has signed an agreement approving Qatar to establish a Qatari Emeri Air Force facility IN THE UNITED STATES.  Specifically in Idaho.  I wonder how the people of Idaho feel about this?  Yes, they may be conservative in nature, but for most people this is a bridge too far.

Qatar.  The same country that bought Trump a 747 that we, the taxpayers, are having to foot the $1Billion bill to retrofit.  The same country that has a history of terrorism.  Qatar is stepping onto US soil with the blessing of our government.

Call your US Senators and Congressperson right now.  And then follow it up with a letter.  And if you can, please signal boost.  This cannot stand.

You might want to think about this one as extra-credit - AND this can be done by anyone, around the world, who is concerned about Olympic athletes's safety.

The United States, specifically Los Angeles, was chosen to host the 2028 Summer Olympics (the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad). But Los Angeles was chosen before Donald Trump won the US Presidency, and before the United States became a terror for anyone who isn't male and white. Given what is going on - especially in California - with immigrants and visitors alike, it would be prudent for the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to pull the games from Los Angeles and host the 2028 Summer Olympics anywhere else in the world.

If you so choose, you can contact the International Olympic Committee Executive Board, and/or Kirsty Coventry, the IOC president, and express your concerns.

Address letters to either IOC President Kirsty Coventry or the IOC Executive Board at this address:
Maison Olympique 1
Route de Vidy
1007 Lausanne, Suisse

Mention the following in your letters:
  • Under Donald Trump, non-white people are facing horrible conditions in the United States
  • People are being terrorized by ICE every single day
  • Donald Trump and his administration have "disappeared" countless people - even those who are natural born citizens of the United States, and placed them in either concentration camps in the United States, or shipped them off to multiple foreign countries
  • For the safety of all Olympians, don't host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.  Move the games to a non-US venue
Remember - if you do this, you'll need to use an International stamp, or the equivalent US stamps totalling at least $1.70.

Donald Trump has weaponized ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in the United States and is causing not only kidnapping and nightmares for immigrant communities across the United States, but also injury and death. Trump and his head of ICE, Kristi Noem, need to be held accountable.

On July 11th, ICE showed up at a Ventura County (California) farm - in masks and brandishing weapons of death. This caused a panic among the farmworkers, including worker Jaime Alanís. In a panic, Alanís fell from a building and broke his neck. After the raid, 8 people were taken to the hospital, including Alanís, who after tests, was removed from life support. He did soon thereafter.

Write a letter to:
  • Donald Trump, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC 20500
  • Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, Washington DC 20528
  • Your State's two Senators and your Congressional Representative
What to say - Personalize for the audience:
  • Farmworkers deserve to be safe and secure in their jobs
  • Farmworkers are the reason we get fresh foods on the table every night
  • Trump and Noem are directly responsible for Alanîs's death for the violent raids
  • The raids are being done for profit - ICE agents are rounding up immigrants, green card holders, and US citizens
  • Alanís's family are having to raise money for his burial when his death is responsible by the United States, who should pay
  • ICE raids need to be stopped and a new approach is needed

So my running this community has been a rough go; I've not had as much time as I've wanted - but I still think it's a good idea.

My gut tells me that I just need to buckle down and post 2-3 times a week (or at least ONCE a week) with a reason to write your local representatives, and even give little scripts on what you should say.  I still like this idea.  For instance, sending a letter to Trump and Ice Barbie saying, "Your actions resulted in this man being killed. You should resign." But there're a ton of topics out there - this is just one.  For me, taking pen to paper is one thing that makes me feel like I'm doing something - even as the world worstens around us.

But are people interested in this? Are you interested in me doing this?  I'm always a "big ideas" kind of person, but sometimes big ideas aren't practical.  So - if you're so inclinded, give me your two bits about what we should do with this community.  Sky's the limit.

And thank you. :)

The US Budget Bill is targeted to give $1Trillion in tax cuts to Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and other billionaires and millionaires. And to pay for it, they are proposing $880Million in cuts to "multiple programs" that include Medicare, Medicaid, Children's Health Insurance Program, SNAP (food assistance), the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), among others.

Republicans are telling the truth when they say their bill does not mention Medicare or Medicaid explicitly (fact check link). However, the changes will be made by the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has oversight into Medicare, Medicaid, the FDA, Energy regulation like nuclear safety, climate programs, and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). But the thing is, Medicare and Medicaid, along with SNAP and the FDA make up the largest part of their budget. So in order to give $1Trillion in tax cuts to people who don't need it, the only way to do it is to cut programs that people rely on every day.

Who to send a letter or postcard to:

Points to make in your letter:

  • Trickle Down Economics has never worked, and this has been proven time and again.
  • Cuts will be automatic due to budget rule PAYGO
  • Cuts will be at least $550 Million, but will likely be much higher.
  • Medicaid will have a new work requirement in order to get benefits - something that permanently disabled people will never be able to fulfill - thus kicking them off of Medicaid.
  • Medicare and Medicaid cover over 127 million Americans. This budget puts all 127 million of those people at risk.

The United States used to be the preeminent dealer when it came to forecasting the weather - worldwide.  Not just what is going to happen within our borders, but also what is going to happen around the world, interacting with millions of people around the globe.  And now Trump is making cuts through his stupid DOGE team of teenage and young 20something losers who know nothing about weather prediction.  Even Trump's FEMA director has stated that, as the world entered hurricane season, he had no idea there even was a hurricane season. There are already protests to Trump cutting funding, but we need to make an impact.

Who to send a letter or postcard to:
  • Trump himself (remember, you don't have to use your name!): 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC 20500
  • Your single Congressperson and Two Senators (click here to get their information including mailing address)
  • David Richardson, Director of FEMA (again, you don't have to use your name!): David Richardson c/o FEMA, PO Box 10055, Hyattsville MD 20782-8055

Here are some things you should include in your letter:
  • Funding needs to be restored to at least 2024 levels
  • No one at DOGE who shut down FEMA funding and projects had any weather knowledge or training
  • It's hurricane season and without continued, accurate forecasting people will die
  • Short staffing at National Weather Service offices across the country is putting people at risk
  • Privatizing the National Weather Service and/or NOAA would cause more death and destruction

Please take a minute to put your thoughts on paper to the people listed above, and make your voice heard!
