[personal profile] squidgiepdx posting in [community profile] communityactionusa
So my running this community has been a rough go; I've not had as much time as I've wanted - but I still think it's a good idea.

My gut tells me that I just need to buckle down and post 2-3 times a week (or at least ONCE a week) with a reason to write your local representatives, and even give little scripts on what you should say.  I still like this idea.  For instance, sending a letter to Trump and Ice Barbie saying, "Your actions resulted in this man being killed. You should resign." But there're a ton of topics out there - this is just one.  For me, taking pen to paper is one thing that makes me feel like I'm doing something - even as the world worstens around us.

But are people interested in this? Are you interested in me doing this?  I'm always a "big ideas" kind of person, but sometimes big ideas aren't practical.  So - if you're so inclinded, give me your two bits about what we should do with this community.  Sky's the limit.

And thank you. :)

I reckon keep it, for when you get a bit more time. It'd be annoying to get around to posting and want to discuss or signalboost something and not have the comm to do it!

I'll be honest. I'm struggling to do much of anything right now other than stay at work. I wanted to be more active, but I have reached the bottom of the reserve's reserve bucket.

I'm in a similar boat. My health is wrecked; I'm barely keeping up with the bare minimum of life stuff as it is. I think writing a letter a couple times a month is likeliest to be the most realistic goal on my end. I appreciate the work done here and am sorry I'm not in a position to do more.

I followed this community because I *am* interested in action items and also have a good impression of you from being a SquidgeWorld user, but... do you know about [community profile] thisfinecrew which is a similar community? They've been around for years now, and it doesn't get a LOT of activity but gets posts maybe once a week. There's also a monthly poll someone posts to check in with how we are all doing...

I guess, in my mind, I'm wondering what you had planned for this community that isn't already covered by [community profile] thisfinecrew. I do feel there's room for two communities - after all, there's a TON of different people in the world and we're just going to naturally focus on different issues that pertain to us. But I also don't want to see you duplicating efforts.

Maybe... since you are a fandom person (and so am I) a discussion on how we can take what we've learned from fandom and apply it to action efforts might be good? For me, I know I'm using my video games as a way to practice bravery currently, and let's face it, contacting your Congress critters/etc is HARD and takes bravery. I did contact my rep several months back about Medicaid, but so far that's all I've managed to do besides... survive.

tbh, I'd like you to keep this community up, even if you don't post often.

I can't lie: everything this administration has done so far has been so enraging & revolting that I've been avoiding the news... And I'm luckily in a pretty thoroughly blue-dominant state (Illinois) with a very progressive governor, so contacting my senators & representatives isn't going to push them to do more than they're already doing (if ineffectually, since they don't have a majority in either the house or senate). Plus I've just joined my union's facility bargaining committee, so I'll be getting info on pressing labor issues of the current administration, at those meetings.

But that doesn't mean I want/intend to do nothing outside of that. I'm hoping to stay informed of other really important stuff going on, and what I should do about it, via this comm. So I would like it to continue!
